Logon and Boot skin ripoff
Published on April 7, 2008 By Stramp In New Users
The logons and bootskins at this members gallery are ripoffs of a wall by PainfilledRunners render Sweet Green Guitar at this site http://painfilledrunner.deviantart.com/art/Sweet-Green-Guitar-59471187  I have notified the author of this wall of this violation. But who do we notify here of violations of others works. I made the ORIGINAL logon of this wall authorized with his permission and now I see the authors work being used and colorized without his permission. When you upload a skin aren't you supposed to have permissions for all non free work. And why can they be uploaded without access to the files to check for the permissions? Isn't that why we upload zip files so permissions can be verified? Or at least if they are not immediately verified it can be found out in the future. Just uploading the logon.xp file does not give you the access to the program files to be able to check to see if someone is using your hard earned blood sweet & tears work or someone elses. There should be or at least I don't see it, a BUTTON for REPORTING PLAGERIZED work. By the way I put this under NEW USERS as this member is NEW. Any suggestions as to how to report this?

Any copyright violations, rips etc should be reported privately to one of the Wizops or Moderators via PM. They will then deal with the matter

I'm a n00b and I think I'm out of my depth with this...

I didn't think things had become so out of hand in these circles, and was just seeing what people thought of my attempts at 'customization'... If I've offended, violated copyright laws, broken wincustomize 'terms of use', or otherwise pizzled people off, then I sincerely apologize - it was not my intention.

urgggghhhhhh i've messed up by the looks of things - and believe me it wasn't intentional... i'm new to this skining scene; and the last thing i was trying to do was to take credit for other peoples art - never have I claimed these skins to be my own work - I took advice from several skinning tutorials and used google image search as a resource

Any suggestions as to how to report this?

Leo The Lion explained the methodology.

PM [Personal Message] myself or another Moderator and any issues can be looked into.

It is assumed that any works uploaded belong to the uploader, or, if another's work is used then appropriate consent is sought/received/included, or the image, etc is freely available for public re-use.

This is also the 'terms of use' connected with uploading works here on Wincustomize.com

https://www.wincustomize.com/about.aspx

See "The Rules" .... #1

Don't confuse 'free for personal use' as 'free to upload/redistribute', as the latter is what artists' copyright is all about....

Amen to that! I have found that this is the best way. Not only does it not call the violator( although sometimes that may seem to be the best way, it's not) Secondly, it gets handled faster...

It's hard for the admin's to remember every piece of work that comes through here. Bring it to their attn and be sure they will handle it!

I noticed that I had 3 rejections almost imediately when I uploaded 3 logons, even tho 2 of the three did contain permissions the third had the permission folder but I grabbed the wrong zip when uploading so that was my mistake. So I went back and got a more complete permission and they were accepted immediately. I for the life of me cannot understand how mine were checked and all of the other author's stuff got thru without any permissions. If the intent was not there to misuse or violate the rules I can forgive that. I don't mean to rain on anyones parade, but I seem to remember alot of this misuse of other people's work going around recently on other sites and it seems everyone was up in arms over it. I did post a QUESTION on the forum but was getting no response. Trying to get it resolved. Didn't seem too fast to me- MY OPINION. But I would like to apoligize to JFG if I hurt his feelings I don't want to hinder a young or new potential artist but I guess we all need to READ the FINE PRINT (rules) and ask questions to be sure not just read tutorials and go.I myself always try to encourage people not discourage them and if that is what happened then I apoligize and would like it to be forgotten and start over. Hope this clears up things.

justfreegraphics, a really great source of graphics you can use is Creative Commons licensed images. There is a search engine at creativecommons.org, and you can search for images based on the purpose you wish to use them for. There are several types of licenses people can choose from so there is no confusion. If you want to change the image, click the little box that says "search for works I can modify, adapt, or build on."

Here's the search page and and you can search Google with the Creative Commons search to filter it for you:
http://search.creativecommons.org/

Make sure you read the specifics of the license before using. For example, you may be required to make any modified versions available under Creative Commons also. There is some really terrific stuff available under Creative Commons now. In fact, you can search at Deviantart for Creative Commons material too.

Let the mods at the site(s) the ripped work is being shown, proving of coarse that it is ripped, know about the rip, they must handle it.

Thanks for clearing up your position Stramp; I completely agree with you that taking credit for other peoples work is wrong, and have had experiences of this happening with my own work in the past - Its a learning curve, and I'm certainly going to be a bit more careful in future...

I took down the offending skins myself before it went any further; as you may have noticed.

I have read the submission guidelines before - there does seem to be some big grey areas there though... And the moderation seems kinda variable - I've submitted bootskins and matching logons and only one has been accepted etc.

Thanks also to Meryse for the resources - I didn't realise you could filter google in that way! I may have a little lookie in a bit.
